When It's Serious, Don't Joke About It

Image
You're familiar with this type of jokes, right? It's so familiar due to one fact: it's relatable. How we want to graduate without the loads of assignments. How petty we are at giving ourselves excuses in slacking off in going to the gym. But of course they are just jokes, right? We still would like to complete our assignments, and we won't slack off or cheat in doing them, right? We still would try hard to be consistent in going to the gym, right? Right? Jokes are cool, really. But jokes like this mostly revolve around a negative hypothetical situation. Which mean it should not happen. In reality, it could happen, it would happen, but it shouldn't. Jokes like this should stay as jokes. It should not be expressed happily in the realm of reality, as it promotes self-depreciation. Lessons From #UNDI18

Image
Last Saturday, I went to a forum conducted in Universiti Malaya. With the #UNDI18, it discusses about the needs, pros & cons of lowering the legal voting age in Malaysia initially from 21 to 18. For your information, Malaysia is 1 of the only 10 nations that sets legal voting age at 21. Which means 90% of global voters actually can start voting from 18 years old. Not surprising at all, since 18 years old all around the world, including Malaysia, are legally considered as an adult. They are legally responsible for crimes, allowed to own properties, able to sign contracts, allowed to get married, eligible to join army, and able to drive legally. So, why not Malaysia lowers the legal voting age? What do you think? Should or should not we do it? Why? Drop your comments down there, I would love to hear it. For me, instead of giving a yes or a no, I just want to write this to share a few things that I've learned during the forum, which consist of the combination of the highlig

Let's stop victim-blaming.

Example 1: A young girl was beaten up & raped last night. Sources stated that she was walking back from work in an isolated street when the attacker showed up. Young girls are advised to not walk alone at night in dark places to prevent such cases. Example 2: Children abduction has rises in number in the Z area over the past few months. It is suspected that there are 2 people involved, where one of them will distract the parent by asking about time, road to some places, etc, while the other one will take the children away from the parent. Parents are advised to keep their eyes on their children at all times in a public setting to prevent such cases. I believe you have read those 2 example of cases. And I also believed that what I have written is the very very very simplest form of the newspaper articles. Now, let me ask you. Who's to blame here? The victim or the offender? We may say that the victims can do something to prevent the cases, but ultimately it is
