What I Have Learned From Erikson

Image
According to Erik Erikson (1966), when we reach the age range between 40 to 65, we will struggle to generate ourselves to be as productive as possible, i n a caring way. If we fail to do so, we will become stagnant. Spending our whole day just basically doing nothing. He called this stage ‘generativity vs. stagnant’. The two main avenues for our generativity at this stage will be caregiving and employment. Erik Erikson myinterestingfacts.com Although caregiving might involve meeting another person’s physical needs (feeding, cleaning, transportation, etc.), actually caregiving revolves a lot about fulfilling one’s psychological needs (feeling loved, appreciated, valued, etc.). And this happens regardless of what kind of connection that we have with our caregivers, be it our foster parents, stepparents or others. Have you ever heard of sandwich generation? It is a term used to refer to the generation of middle-aged people who are supposedly squeezed by the needs of the y

Find Peace in NOT Knowing Things

Image
investigations.peta.org This issue has surfaced, (or some might say resurfaced) on my Twitter. And it really brings distress to me as I watch it. I cannot imagine how would these baby monkeys actually experience and face the situation. I can't help but wonder. Human cruelty is already a big problem on this Earth. So why on Earth are we adding a brand new big problem, called animal cruelty? Are we really that cruel? These cruel actions are being justified by some parties, as psychological experiments. As experiments that are conducted to gain more knowledge and understanding, to help out mankind in return. Thinking about it reminds me to Belko Experiment. A movie which portrays a social experiment, where the participants need to kill three people. If they don't, six people would be killed. More instructions follow ahead, but I'll just leave it here, so I don't spoil it. The point that I am trying to convey here, is both of them claim whatever that they are

Why I Dislike Debating (Not Debate)

Image
It all started when I was seventeen years old. My teacher asked me to join the English debate team for the school, simply out of reason that I can speak English not just fluently, but also spontaneously. I didn't think too much about it at that time, and just said yes. Plus, I like talking. The topic that I got was, and I'm simplifying it here: can students bring phones to school? Firstly I got excited, because I totally agree with the statement. Reasons? Maybe I'll save it for another time. Then I found out that I got to be the opposing team. I was quite bummed out, but that didn't stop me from trying my best. In fact, it helps me to see the disadvantages of supporting the statement. It was just that, when it was the actual day of the competition, when it was the actual time for me to stand up and talk, I didn't feel like my true self. My mouth said no, but my heart said yes. And although I won the competition at the end, I felt disappointed that I didn&

Dear You...

Image
(I've made this into a video! Click  here. ) quora.com I don't know you. I don't know your history. I don't know your background. I don't know your beliefs and principles that you hold in your life. Thus, I am not eligible at all to judge you. I am not perfect either. We all make mistakes. We are all improving in life. In life, things are constantly out of hands. Sometimes we feel that we have little to no control in our lives. And that is partially true, depending on your perspective. So, when we make mistakes, or at least what is deemed as mistakes, we will tend to either blame ourselves, or blame others. Or even both. Blame ourselves for not knowing. Blame ourselves for not trying to do what's right Blame ourselves for not doing what's right. Blame ourselves for not resisting ourselves to do what's wrong. Then, Blame our parents for not raising us right. Blame our friends for taking us to the wrong alley. Blame our surrounding

"Mind Your Own Business" Is Not Relevant Anymore

Image
"Sony released a new trailer for 'Detroit: become Human' at the Paris Games Week 2017. It pictures a father, Todd, and daughter, Alice, that live with their android, Kara. We soon find out that Todd is abusive. Alice even gets tragically killed by her father because the android did not intervene. But then we are shown what would happen if Kara decided to step in. The amount of choice is astounding. Kara could do anything from physically or verbally defend Alice, trying to escape the house and more. Let's hope that this trailer is a good reflection of the game to come." - Zoomin Games, 31 Oct. Kara. vg247.com You should see the video on Facebook. It shook me. Mainly because Kara is a reflection of all of us. Kara is us, when we see someone clearly in problem, but are scared to help. Kara is us, when we see something devastating in front of us, but we choose not to do anything. Kara is us, when we have the choice to turn things around, bu

What Does It Mean to Make Love?

Image
Sexual entertainment is norm now. We can't hide nor deny it. Every song will have at least 1 line as a sexual reference. Every movie or other types of visual entertainment will potray the supposely intimate scene graphically. Every novel will also attempt to make the readers visualize the scene. Every dance is not a dance without some sexy moves. As a result, we walk around like a human on the outside, but unconciously preying on others like an animal on the inside. Our brains send cues to arouse ourselves. It can be what you see, hear, feel or think. Then it is up to us to take action. Just let it be? Stare? Jerk off behind the computer? Find a hooker? Demand by force? Once or twice, it is inevitable. But what happen today is that these arousals keep coming, every time, everywhere, in every way. It is too much to the point that just 'letting it be' is not an option anymore. So we will cope. And our coping mechanisms will be different. Also considering, our

If She Says No, It's A No

Image
Sexual assaults are quite different from other types of assaults. They are defined not exactly by the magnitude of damage, but rather the consent of both parties. And this consent must happen before, mutually. Everyone loves sex and wants to have one. But that does not justify you to be entitled on a person's body, demanding things that she was not ready for or declined to, and even worse, manipulating how she should feel about it. Saying no should be simple, and accepting 'no' as an answer should be simple, and they should stay simple. If one says no, it's a no. Even if it is just a slight hand touch. Simple rules, everyone. I know, you just want to have fun. That girl just needs a little bit of convincing. A little bit of touching, she'll get hot. A little bit more, she'll feel the fun. Right? But sex is more than just a mere fun act. Sex is one of the ways you bond with your partner, and grow your love together. It is out of love and fondness

Are Muslim Women Forced To Wear Hijab?

Image
pinterest.com When a Muslim woman decides to wear hijab, she either gets celebrated or banned. When a Muslim woman decides not to wear hijab, she... Wait, it's actually the same. Depending on your culture, place and ethics, choosing both have their own perks and consequences. So... are Muslim women forced to wear hijab? I am not going to talk about statements from Quran and hadiths (Prophet Muhammad's sayings). I am not an expert in that field. I am just going to talk a field which I believe everyone (at least, claims to be) is an expert in. Logic. Firstly, if you define 'forced', as if, if you don't do it right now, something bad will happen to you IMMEDIATELY, it is true. Like maybe if someone puts a gun in your head, and say, "Scream 'I love Charlie Puth' or I'll shoot you, that's obviously forcing, and that is absolutely wrong. So, if you say Muslim women are forced to wear hijab, by ISLAM, it is not accurate. It's no

I Want A Degree... And A Husband... Together!

Image
istockphoto.com Come on. I know you, at least low-key, want it. Don't give me that stupid and judging look. Why can't I? Can't I study and get married at the same time? Can't I get a good degree, and a decent husband, together? I know that while you are working hard on your papers and classes, rushing for club activities, scoring on every subjects, at the very same time, you would have inside your phones thousands of virtual things to look at, of your beloved singers, entertainers, athletes or God-knows-whoever-else, online and offline, performing and not, even properly dressed and the opposite. Maybe. And you would spend every single valuable free time that you have to watch them, and engage with them, and imagining things to do with them. That is just about celebrity-crush. What about your 'crush' crush? Maybe you don't deal with them like you deal with your celebrity crush, but still, it is a big deal. Your heart pounds when you meet th

"Should I Depend On A Man?"

Image
(I've made this into a video!  Click here. ) Girls, what are your motivation to study hard, get a job and be independent? So you don't have to depend on any man in your life? At first, I do agree with this. I mean, I am a girl too. But I've been thinking, 1) Can we really do everything by ourselves? Like, being totally independent to others? 2) Is it wrong for a girl to ask for a man's help? Is it wrong that I like it when someone help me? 3) So do I have to really study hard, get a job and be independent, just to prove that I don't need to depend to men in my life? Again, when we go through this statement, we know that it is not 100% right, eventhough it is totally not 100% wrong. And it is just as equally important to study the wrong ones, just like we embrace and cherish the right ones. "So, what IS wrong with it?" Reminder: All of these are my own personal opinions. You are free to agree and disagree, and I am more than happy if

Seven Sisters' Review: Mass Extinction or Limit The Numbers?

Image
The Seven Sisters movie takes place in the future, where seven sisters have to survive in one identity, due to the policy that only allows families to have one child due to overpopulation. Don't worry, there won't be any spoilers. I hope. abudhabi2.com While watching it, I get all kinds of feelings and think all kinds of things. We know that here in reality, China had already implemented the policy, and of course, most aren't happy about it. But still, we cannot deny that overpopulation is a huge problem that can lead to human extinction. So let's think. Do we keep adding people up on this planet until we all disappear in mass extinction, or do we limit the numbers to stabilize the life of the whole species? Logically, we would go to the second option, right? But let's be honest. Limiting families to have children sounds so wrong. And the fact that we need to choose between these two options, just make things sounds even totally messed up. It

3 Things We Can Learn From Policy Makers

Image
sciencebusiness.net Policy makers are... well, people who make policies. And once they are made, it is frustratingly hard to change. That's why many activists who are claiming for changes, have hard times with policy makers, as they are the last ones to adapt to the environment, showing the lack of adaptability. The policies that they make also seem always to be unrealistic, and they are stubborn as hell to change it. So people would always say that policy makers should adapt more and make changes more flexible. It is true that they should. But I think we can learn something from their stubbornness. Before I proceed, let me clarify that I'm talking about governmental, legal side of policy makers. Because, when you think about it, we all make laws and policies, and we conducted them on our own environment. Just like a father conducts laws in his house to his family. So yeah, keep that in mind. 1. Eventhough the policies aren't always practical, it is alw

I Was A Science Student, But Now I'll Be Learning Art

Image
blog.diversitynursing.com I was a science-stream student during my school days. Now, I will be studying art in my university. People around me who hear this, especially the ones who know me during my school days, will give responses like. "Aww, that's a shame. You should pursue science." "What a waste to learn art after all those years of studying science." I do expect people to be surprised, I mean I am surprised at myself too. But, more than that, eventhough they didn't explicitly say it, it's like they are saying I am making a mistake and this choice is wrong. And that makes me really sad. And I have reasons for that. 1. It's never a waste to learn things. No matter what I learn, I enjoy it. I never think every second of my time learning science during my school days is a waste. Learning new things will make you look at the world in different ways, and it changes as you learn more, diverse fields. For example, an athlete who

When The Trees Grow Money and The Soil is Made of Gold

Image
Tonight, as you go to sleep, try to imagine this. Imagine you are waking up from your sleep. Light penetrates your eyes harder than usual. In fact, the whole atmosphere feels so different. You are not in your bedroom, that's for sure. Then you realize, you are in a forest. No, not just any forest. Every single tree, in the forest, grows money. And the soil is made of gold. A dream comes true, indeed. You start trying to collect as many of the valuables as you can. I mean, come on, who wouldn't. Also at the same time, you try to navigate yourself out of from the forest. And you did it! Cheers to you. You have found a road that leads to a town. Maybe you can get help there. But, to your surprise, the trees and the soil at the town are also made of money and gold respectively. And even more surprising, they don't even care. It turns out, whatever planet or universe you are in now, are not running their economy with money nor gold. Just like how you would n

Reasons Why Despacito Is Able To Hit 3 Billion Views

Image
giphy.com I am sorry for being a slowpoke here, but I just found out that Despacito is the first music video to hit 3 billion views. And I thought Gangnam Style, the first music video that hit 1 billion views, is unable to be defeated. It's already down to the third place already. So, why? It is just one of an apparently good song. Why suddenly almost half of the world population are tuning it in? Another fun fact that I found out, is that among 70 top most viewed videos on YouTube, only 3 of them are not music videos. Maybe that helps. Let's see more of the reasons here. 1. They are music videos (okay, I know I'm repeating, I'm sorry, again) There are 2 things on music videos that will surely give advantages in terms of views. Either people really enjoy the video & show it to their friends, or it is a shortcut for people to listen to songs they like. In the entertainment industry, there are a lot of budget spent for music videos, and the results ar

3 Reasons Why Movies Are Unrealistic

Image
One of the things that I am so grateful for is the existence of movies. Regardless of genre, animation or not, maybe virtual-reality movie in the future, I am relieved by the fact that they exist. They allow you to experience new realities, explore new realms and discover new perspectives about things, in the comfort of the movie theater or the couch in front of your screen. But, as much as we want movies to be real as possible, they are not. And these are the reasons why. Take note here that I am going to talk about mainstream, normal, family-friendly type of movies. 1. Miracles do happen in life, but they do not solve problems in reality Unlike miracles that usually occurs in the movies that will usually be the ultimate key to the victory of the heroes, reality does not work that way. Of course, some unexpected things happen in your life, and they may favor you, but that is only an opportunity. Real victory does not occur until you take it and make it helpful to you. 2
