3 Things We Can Learn From Policy Makers

sciencebusiness.net

Policy makers are... well, people who make policies.

And once they are made, it is frustratingly hard to change. That's why many activists who are claiming for changes, have hard times with policy makers, as they are the last ones to adapt to the environment, showing the lack of adaptability. The policies that they make also seem always to be unrealistic, and they are stubborn as hell to change it. So people would always say that policy makers should adapt more and make changes more flexible.

It is true that they should. But I think we can learn something from their stubbornness.

Before I proceed, let me clarify that I'm talking about governmental, legal side of policy makers. Because, when you think about it, we all make laws and policies, and we conducted them on our own environment. Just like a father conducts laws in his house to his family. So yeah, keep that in mind.

1. Eventhough the policies aren't always practical, it is always detailed.
And this is important, because they are making policies not just for themselves or their families, they are making them for the entire nation. So it has to be precise & concise. Alternate plans needed to be thought about, even if it takes from Plan B to Plan Z.

Everything needs to be perfect, because one simple mistake can make thousands and even millions of people suffer. Of course, things don't always go as planned, but at least they are planning, and they are doing it right.

2. It takes a lot to change their minds
You can't blame them for this. Of course, society will change from time to time. But they can't just make it as an excuse for policies to change too. There are a lot things to consider, and like I said, this effects the whole nation. So the best thing that they can do, is to keep the old policies as they are, while they continue to observe, monitor, and discuss about the changes.

3. Elaboration is their language
Especially for activists, stop yelling things about changes at them, and speak in their language. Elaboration. Simply telling them to fight climate change, save the animals in the zoo, and bring more humanitarian help to the war zone will help, but not so much.

Lay out a constructed plan to change whatever policies you want them to change, together with pros and cons, and show it to them. Make comparisons to the old policies to show them how things can change. Because while they may want to change it, they really need to think about a lot of things. If you already do this for them, it would be easier for them to process the information given and make decisions.

Of course, how we wish it will be as simple as it sounds, with all of the time-consuming procedures and bureaucracies, from both you and them. But it is the most effective way to make a statement to them. And I am not telling that we should stop all the rallies either. To make change, every contribution is celebrated and will even help these policy makers to view the importance of the changes. It is just that many people are trying the most ineffective way, and expecting for the most effective results.

Now this may sounds like nothing to do with us. But try to think about this.

You yourself, as a human, have your own thoughts & opinion, reflected by your actions. And those actions will effect you and people around you. Not too many of them at least.

What if suddenly a person just comes to you and say things like,
"You shouldn't treat your sister like that."
"You should call your mother more."
"You shouldn't move into that area."

Apart from being a little mad, you will be confused. Especially if you keep asking them,
"Okay then, how should I treat my sister? How frequent should I call my mother? Why shouldn't I move into that area?"
that person just keep repeating his/her statements without elaborating more. Even worse, they will just walk away, leaving you with more confusion.

It is better for that person to come to you in good manners, calmly stating what they think you did wrong, and gives opinion on how to make it better. You may disagree, but at least you'll appreciate it. Because you really don't want to treat your sister badly. You want to call your mother as frequent as possible. And you don't want to move into an area which will not bring comfort and peace to you.

So, aren't policy makers humans like you too? More than that, whatever decisions they are making, will effect the country and all people in it.
The basics of making changes is to listen, think and take actions. And this applies to everyone.
If we all do it, collectively,
even the least insignificant person could change the world.
