Seven Sisters' Review: Mass Extinction or Limit The Numbers?

The Seven Sisters movie takes place in the future, where seven sisters have to survive in one identity, due to the policy that only allows families to have one child due to overpopulation.

Don't worry, there won't be any spoilers. I hope.

While watching it, I get all kinds of feelings and think all kinds of things.

We know that here in reality, China had already implemented the policy, and of course, most aren't happy about it.

But still, we cannot deny that overpopulation is a huge problem that can lead to human extinction.

So let's think. Do we keep adding people up on this planet until we all disappear in mass extinction, or do we limit the numbers to stabilize the life of the whole species?

Logically, we would go to the second option, right?

But let's be honest. Limiting families to have children sounds so wrong. And the fact that we need to choose between these two options, just make things sounds even totally messed up.

It's like Belko's Experiment. You kill 3 people or kill 6 people? Obviously the first choice is better, but why do we still feel awful, even after we know we are doing things better? I mean, of course both options are awful, but shouldn't we feel better that we had chosen the ones with the least harm?

These answers are derived by logic. In Seven Sisters', the policy is derived by science. A properly conducted study with a solid proof and conclusion that overpopulation is indeed a big problem, and obviously the most effective ways to overcome it is to reduce numbers. When the numbers are too big, we subtract them. Logic math.

But believe your guts. Believe it when it tells you this solution is not right, even if the science proves it is right.

Because science and logic are just one aspect of life. Feelings, emotions, soul, spirituality. These are also crucial aspects of life.

'The best solution' cannot just be determined by science and logic. To decide in life, we need to consider all the aspects of life.

But unfortunately most of our decisions are ONLY based on logic and science. It is a right thing to do, but to consider ONLY these two factors is wrong.

Furthermore, we only emphasize the importance of learning science, although there are many more fields that are equally important to be learned.

These non-material and non-logical fields deserves equal attention that science gets. They deserved to be learned just as much as science is.

No doubt, learning these are not as the same as learning science. You need to take different approach and use different methods in order to comprehend them. Only after you learn it, you will be able to understand it, and make wiser decisions when you also put these aspects into consideration.

One things for sure, just like when you learn science, when you learn these fields, you will be able to see the world in a new way. You will never look at things the same again. Learning each day every day will change your view about the world, thus indirectly changing you.

I am not telling to be the perfect student who studies everything in this world. It's not about choosing between fields to study. In fact, it's not about the fields at all.

It is about realizing that the world is so much more than one aspect, and how we should learn and consider each of them before making especially big decisions in life, within our capability.

I hope we all grow and mature well in our distinct fields. And hopefully we can all collaborate in the future, to make the best decisions, for ourselves, and our world.

Until then, I keep my hopes high, that one day, there will be a better solution than one-family-one-child policy.
