Reasons Why Despacito Is Able To Hit 3 Billion Views

giphy.com

I am sorry for being a slowpoke here, but I just found out that Despacito is the first music video to hit 3 billion views. And I thought Gangnam Style, the first music video that hit 1 billion views, is unable to be defeated. It's already down to the third place already.

So, why? It is just one of an apparently good song. Why suddenly almost half of the world population are tuning it in?

Another fun fact that I found out, is that among 70 top most viewed videos on YouTube, only 3 of them are not music videos.
Maybe that helps.

Let's see more of the reasons here.

1. They are music videos (okay, I know I'm repeating, I'm sorry, again)
There are 2 things on music videos that will surely give advantages in terms of views. Either people really enjoy the video & show it to their friends, or it is a shortcut for people to listen to songs they like.

In the entertainment industry, there are a lot of budget spent for music videos, and the results are always dope. It is important to make eye-catching music videos so audience will not just listen to the song, but have visual and emotional attachment to the song as well. So, if they like it, they will share it to their social contacts, and they will always tune in more to listen more of the song.

2. It is a good song
It has a catchy beat. Although it is hard to sing along, people can catch quite a word or two from it. It gives you the dancing vibe, whether you are a 2-years-old girl learning how to walk, or an 80-years-old man who are having troubles with your walking.
Put these all together, and you have a good song. Excluding the lyrics. Which brings me to the nest point...

3. It's about sex
A simple pathetic fact about the entertainment industry; sex sales.

Be honest, what do you see in the music video?

Beach, the singers, hot girls, the singers, people gathering around, hot girls, people dancing, hot girls dancing, people enjoying time together, hot girls.

We may be different in culture, country, religion, beliefs and such, but we are humans, and humans are driven to sex. That is not wrong.

But bad people in the entertainment knows this, and they use this to attract people for money and whatever else that they want. That IS wrong.

So even if whatever is happening in the music video is against our moral, cultural and religious beliefs, and you try your very best to avoid it, it will stick to you somehow someway. Even if not all, some of it will.

Can't help that. But at least you can blame on others. Because...

4. "Have you listened to that?"
This is basically a chain reaction. Once something has become popular, it will attract people. And people who don't listen to it, or don't even know it, will feel left out, making them to seek out for it. Even to you who are reading now but knows nothing about Despacito, don't you feel intrigued to look it out? (I don't prefer that)

Imagine if something you don't know is being mentioned, and you are truthfully asking, "What's this?"
And all of your friends be like, "Wait, you haven't heard of this? How come you do not know about this?"

Whether the connotation is positive or negative, you will feel left out and search for it to keep up.

5. It features Justin Bieber.
I mean, come on. Bieber. How it could not be popular?

If you noticed, these four reasons are applicable not just for Despacito. Gangnam Style also became a hit because of the same reasons. And also to other similar music videos. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about.

Apart from sex, we are also driven to good music. Music is a universal language. That's why the lyrics become less important than the melody and the beat. It is totally understandable.

Personally, I feel the best way to actually enjoy music is to look up for the lyrics. The lyrics are the message of the song. Some are good, some are really inspiring, and some just make you puzzled, like "What he was thinking when he was writing these lyrics?" It is just as diverse as melodies.

So whatever music you are listening to, the lyrics will subconsciously have effects on you, even if it is totally in a different language. A good beat can't change the fact that it has bad lyrics. And it's going to affect you. Inspirational lyrics will make you inspire. Violent lyrics will make you violent. Sad lyrics will make you sad. Sexual lyrics will make you turned on. And God knows how you are going to turn down. It'd better be the right, legal and harmless way.

So at least, at the very least, if you can't keep the 'bad songs' out of your head, if you know the lyrics, at least you know what it says. At least you know it's wrong.
At least.
