Are Likes, Views & Shares Important?
They say that likes, views & shares is not important.
Here’s what I think.
I view all of those numbers of likes, views & shares, as metrics, for the sake of measurement. For example, CGPA is used a metric to measure students’ performance. Salary is used as a metric to measure workload (I guess? I mean, I'm not working yet, so I don't know. But you get the point, right?).
The same goes to numbers of likes, views & shares. But the question is, the metric of what?
Because unlike those 2 examples, the number of shares, likes & views of a content can have many meaning. For example, an inspiring video having millions of views, likes & shared is a sign that the idea is well-received. But, let’s say the same number of views, likes & shared is owned by an embarrassing, or humiliating video. Does that mean that video is favoured by many too?
So, what are the metrics of likes, shares & views?
Well, I think it’s up to you actually.
And how do we do that?
Well, examine why do you want so many likes in the first place.
For many people, the answer is fame, and I agree that it’s not the most advisable thing to chase.
Examine why you are in social medias in the first place.
For me, I primarily use social medias to catch up with my friends. So, how many likes I get is not even a concern in my mind, because I just want to connect with my friends in the first place.
But, launching Kelly Telly, of course I want to increase my likes, shares & views.
Why? Because of fame?
No. (Not neccesarily).
Imagine 10 views vs 100 views on a video of mine. If a video get 100 views, so at least maybe we can deduce that there are 20 people who really listened to the message. The other 80 may just have mistakenly or unintentionally open my video, or maybe they just view the first 3 seconds of it, or maybe they’re not really paying attention, etc. Compare this to 10 views on a video of mine, it’s most likely that none of them really listened. Maybe all of them did unintentionally open my video, view the first 3 seconds of it, or not really paying attention.
So, if I increase my views, I increase the probability of more people listening to my messages.
Let me give you another example.
Now, companies are racing to build their own pace & place in social media. They want to get the highest likes, shares, views. Why?
Because it’s marketing! The more people like, share & view their content, the more people will know. The probability of people buying from them is higher.
This is quite a short writing, mainly due to its simplicity.
Are likes, shares & views important? It depends.
In conclusion, let’s reflect on how & why actually we use social medias. What do you use it for?
Thus, due to that, are likes, shares & views necessary for you?
